Contextual Probability and Word Frequency as Determinants of Pauses and Errors in Spontaneous Speech
نویسنده
چکیده
This study investigated the relationship between the contextual probability of lexical items in spontaneous speech, as measured by the Cloze procedure, and word frequency. It also attempted to determine the relative importance of the two variables in causing delay, in the form of hesitation, in the production of spontaneous speech. The analysis revealed that content words of low contextual probability tended to be more infrequent than other words, and that both contextual probability and word frequency were associated with hesitation in speech. Contextual probability had an effect o n hesitation even when word frequency was held constant, but word frequency had no effect when contextual probability was controlled. Analysis of certain types of errors, also, revealed that word frequency may play an important role in the lexical selection process.

Everyday speech is littered with disfluency, often correlated with the production of less predictable words (e.g., Beattie & Butterworth [Beattie, G., & Butterworth, B. (1979). Contextual probability and word frequency as determinants of pauses in spontaneous speech. Language and Speech, 22, 201–211.]). But what are the effects of disfluency on listeners? In an ERP experiment which compared flu...
متن کاملAutomatic Detection and Removal of Disfluencies from Spontaneous Speech
Unlike rehearsed and prepared speech, spontaneous speech contains high occurrence of disfluencies, like repetitions, filled pauses, and hesitations. Disfluencies can seriously hamper the word recognition accuracy of an Automatic Speech Recogniser (ASR), by increasing word insertion and deletion and rejection rates. In this paper we introduce signal processing algorithms to automatically identif...
متن کاملA real-time filled pause detection system for spontaneous speech recognition
This paper describes a method for automatically detecting filled (vocalized) pauses, which are one of the hesitation phenomena that current speech recognizers typically cannot handle. The detection of these pauses is important in spontaneous speech dialogue systems because they play valuable roles, such as helping a speaker keep a conversational turn, in oral communication. Although a few speec...

This paper describes a method for detecting filled pauses (including word lengthening), which are one of the hesitation phenomena. This detection is important in speech dialogue systems because they play valuable roles in oral communication. Although there have been a few previous speech recognition systems handling filled pauses, they have not detected them individually and consequently could ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Word Meaning on Speech DysFluency in Adults with Developmental Stuttering
Objectives: Stuttering is one of the most prevalent speech and language disorders. Symptomology of stuttering has been surveyed from different aspects such as biological, developmental, environmental, emotional, learning and linguistic. Previous researches in English-speaking people have suggested that some linguistic features such as word meanings may play a role in the frequency of speech non...
